Understanding Contextual Density, Explained Simply (With Examples)
Short answer: contextual density measures the proportion of genuinely useful words in your copy — the words that actually speak to your topic (keyword variations, entities, trade terminology) — relative to the total word count. The higher that proportion, the more Google treats your page as expert. It is the core of the method we apply to every page, inherited from our sister company ProStar SEO.
First, understand how Google reads your site: the library
Here is the analogy we use with every new client. Your website is a library. Google does not read the whole library at once: it reads books, one at a time. Every page on your site is a book, and every book has its own subject: your primary keyword.
When you look for a book, you first scan the spine on the shelf: that is your title tag, the one that shows up in search results. You pick up the book and read the big cover title: that is your H1, the page's main heading. One simple rule: one book, one cover title; one page, a single H1, a single primary keyword. Finally, you skim the table of contents to decide whether the book is worth reading: those are your H2s, the section headings. If the chapters do not tell a coherent story, the book convinces no one, and the page does not rank.
Now, the question that matters: between two books with the same title, how does Google pick the better one? It does not "understand" the text the way you do. Google counts, it does not read. And what it counts is precisely what contextual density measures.
The formula, jargon-free
Contextual density is calculated like this:

- Keyword variations: your keyword and all its forms — synonyms, plurals, combinations. For a bakery: "bakery," "artisan bakery," "artisan baker."
- Relevant entities: the recognized names in your world — brands, places, people, concepts, tools. For that same bakery: "baguette tradition," "AOP butter," "the Marais," "Label Rouge flour."
- LSI terms: the context words that naturally accompany the topic: "kneading," "sourdough starter," "batch," "crusty."
- Stop words: the articles, prepositions and connectors (the, of, and, in...) that carry no meaning. They are removed from the calculation.
The result is a percentage: the share of your content that actually speaks to your topic. A page that ranks on Google's first page almost always shows a higher contextual density than the pages ranking behind it.
A concrete example: two baker sentences
Compare these two sentences of identical length, for a "bakery Paris 4th arrondissement" page:

Same length, same spot on the page, but the second sentence proves something to Google: this site knows its craft. The first sentence is filler — what we call fluff — and it dilutes the quality of the page. Multiply that gap across 1,500 words, and you understand why two seemingly comparable pages can rank ten positions apart.
Contextual density ≠ keyword density
Beware the false friend. The old "keyword density" of the 2000s meant repeating the same keyword a set number of times (the famous 1 to 3%), all the way to the keyword stuffing that Google learned to penalize: Matt Cutts was publicly burying it as early as 2012.
Contextual density measures the opposite: not the repetition of one word, but the richness and diversity of your topic's vocabulary. Repeating "bakery" thirty times adds nothing; covering baguette tradition, sourdough, slow kneading, Label Rouge flour and house-made viennoiserie proves expertise. Repetition impoverishes; diversity enriches. That is the whole difference between writing for a counter and writing to demonstrate what you know.
How do we know it works?
Not by intuition: by measurement. Our method relies on continuous testing of Google's algorithm, notably through the Cora SEO software, which analyzes more than 5,000 factors across the top 100 result pages for every keyword studied. Across millions of data points, the factors tied to contextual density (distinct entities, LSI terms, keyword variations) consistently rank among those most correlated with top positions.
Two honest caveats are in order, because a good method knows its limits. First, correlation is not causation: a page rich in entities is mechanically longer, without length itself being rewarded. Second, the optimal dosage remains proprietary to the algorithm: our practical rule is to aim roughly 10% above the competitors that rank, not to "annihilate" them, because over-optimization can cost positions even without a formal penalty. Beat the benchmark, do not blow past it.

How to apply it to your site, in five steps
- Choose one keyword per page, just as a book has only one subject. Put it in the title, the H1 and the URL.
- List your trade's vocabulary: variations, entities (brands, places, standards, tools), technical terms your customers and peers actually use.
- Study the pages that already rank for your keyword: which terms do they all use? That is your benchmark to beat, by roughly 10%.
- Write while hunting down fluff: every sentence must contain at least one term from your list, one useful piece of information, or a push toward action. Everything else gets cut.
- Measure, compare, adjust: SEO is an engineering discipline, not fortune-telling. What is not measured does not improve.

What is the right contextual density to aim for?
There is no universal magic number: the right level depends on your market. Our rule: measure the 2-3 pages that dominate your keyword with a consistent method, then aim roughly 10% above their average. On this site, our pages sit between 18 and 30% depending on how technical the sector is.
Does contextual density replace backlinks?
No, but the hierarchy has changed: the raw number of backlinks has tumbled in ranking correlations, in favor of content quality. A link from a page that is itself dense on your topic is worth more than ten generic links.
Can I calculate it myself?
Yes, by hand on a short text: list your contextual terms, count their occurrences, divide by the word count excluding stop words. At the scale of a full site, a script or a semantic analysis tool becomes indispensable, especially to measure your competitors with the same method as your own pages.
Do I risk a penalty by over-optimizing?
